A woman from Long Island used her dead grandmother’s pen name to collect Social Security benefits for years, authorities claimed.
Freeport resident Alexandria Sobrane, age 46, was arraigned on Tuesday, March 18 for her alleged Social Security fraud, the Nassau County District Attorney announced.
According to the DA’s Office, Sobrane’s grandmother, Hannah Sobrane, was born in 1920 and wrote children’s books under the pen name Babe Power.
Starting in 1985, she retired and began receiving her Social Security benefits under the nom de plume she used for writing.

George Moore, age 40 of Freeport, was arraigned for the incident on Wednesday, Feb. 28, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.

A Long Island man was arrested after he allegedly set a couple’s cars and home on fire while they slept, police said.
It happened on Tuesday, Dec. 5 in Rockville Centre, according to Nassau County Police.
At approximately 5 a.m., a North Forest Avenue couple was sleeping in their second-floor bedroom when they were awoken by a loud noise.

A man who managed to steal three cars on two separate occasions from a Long Island car dealership has been taken into custody nearly a year after the crimes, police announced.
On Monday, Oct. 2, Andrew Ponton, age 21 of Queens, was arrested for his alleged role in the theft of multiple cars from a Freeport car dealership, according to Nassau County Police.

Two men pleaded guilty to their roles in robbing, shooting, and killing a Long Island man who had just received a significant amount of money, officials announced.
